Most people may think that there seems to be no complications in Cesarean section. In fact, the chances of hemorrhage in C-section may conceivably be higher than for normal delivery. Most importantly, there are possibilities of “placenta accreta spectrum”, one of the severe complications, for future pregnancies. Additionally, this can lead to hemorrhage, hysterectomy, or even death.

Placenta accreta is one of the most complex and complicated diseases required specialists. It requires state-of the-art equipment, and potential healthcare support units. Therefore, the OBGYN team, led by Assoc. Prof. Savitree Pranpanus, MD (Physician, Maternal – Fetal Medicine Unit), has established the PSU PAS Team to provide complete healthcare services to patients with placenta accreta, from across the 14 southern provinces. Songklanagarind Hospital is the first institute to receive the Disease Specific Certification for medical care management for patients with placenta accreta, from the Healthcare Accreditation Institute (Public Organization).
Dr. Pranpanus said that as of 2016, the team has been improving the guidelines for patient care in the aspects of diagnosis, treatment as well as post-operation care. The multidisciplinary team consists of obstetricians, gynecologists, surgeons, anesthesiologists, pediatricians, radiologists, healthcare providers from the surgical intensive unit, and the blood bank transfusion medicine team.
Dr. Pranpanus also mentioned that a Disease Specific Certification (DSC) for PAS is essential. To provide the best and most efficient care for the patients, continuous improvement of patient care, substantial care plan, and solid medical teams are required.
